About NADRA

The voice of the deck industry.

The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) is the trade association for the deck and railing industry — deck builders, inspectors, manufacturers, dealers, lumberyards and suppliers.

Its mission is to provide a unified source for the professional development, promotion and growth of the deck and railing building industry, with a strong focus on safe building practices. NADRA runs National Deck Safety Month® every May, the Check Your Deck® homeowner campaign, and a Deck Evaluation certification program for professionals who inspect decks.

Deck Haven is a NADRA member and holds NADRA’s deck evaluation certification.

Why it matters

A deck can look fine and still fail.

Rot, rusted hardware and weak connections often hide under the surface. NADRA’s numbers show why regular inspections matter:

source of deck injuries: handrail failure, followed by the deck’s attachment to the house

What we inspect

Every part of the deck, top to bottom.

We follow the structure of NADRA’s deck evaluation, working from the ground up.

Footings & posts

Are the footings sound and the posts properly sized, attached and free of rot, notching or splitting?

Girders & joists

We check beams, joists and the hangers and connections that tie them together.

Ledger connection

Where the deck attaches to your house — one of the most common failure points. We look at fasteners, flashing and water damage.

Deck boards

Soft, cracked, rotted or loose boards and the fasteners holding them down.

Stairs

Stringers, treads, risers and the stair’s connection to the deck and landing.

Handrails & guards

NADRA names handrail failure as the largest source of deck injuries — we test every post and rail for strength and safe spacing.

Fasteners & hardware

Correct fasteners in the right places, and signs of corrosion on nails, screws, bolts and connectors.

Overall safety

A clear verdict: what’s safe, what needs attention soon and what should be fixed before anyone uses the deck.

Warning signs

When to call right away.

If you notice any of these, stay off the affected area and have the deck inspected before you use it again:

Good times to inspect

When homeowners book us.

Buying or selling a home

Know exactly what shape the deck is in before closing — or fix issues before a buyer’s inspector finds them.

Before summer

May is NADRA’s National Deck Safety Month® — a good reminder to check your deck before cookout season.

After harsh weather

Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow and storms are hard on footings, ledgers and fasteners.

Older or unknown decks

If you didn’t build it, don’t know when it was built, or it has never been checked, it’s time.

Have another question? We’re happy to help.

The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) is the trade association for the deck and railing industry. Its members include deck builders, inspectors, manufacturers, dealers and lumberyards, and it promotes safe building practices through programs like National Deck Safety Month® and its Deck Evaluation certification.

NADRA’s Deck Evaluation certification trains industry professionals in a systematic approach to assessing deck construction and safety, and requires passing NADRA’s exam. The certification is valid for three years and requires current NADRA membership, so it has to be kept up to date.

No. We tell you what we find and what it means. Plenty of decks only need small repairs — and if yours is in good shape, we’ll say so.
